    Rant on Bedding/Breeding
So I was going to put my male with one of my females yesterday, BUT my boyfriend decided to get new bedding for Icky. Its coconut husk. I am allergic to one thing in the world.

    Coconuts.

Which means I can't breed Icky and Sable for a while..
I can't even go near the tank, I can't even hold my snake, and I can't clean the tank because I don't want to send myself to the hospital.

I'd make him clean it but he's at work. I'm making him do it tomorrow, cause I sure as sunshine would LOVE to be able to hold my snakes..and, you know. Breed them.

    /Rant.

On the other hand - Other than me being allergic to it, is there anything about coconut bedding that will hurt Icky? I've obviously never used it, and never investigated it for obvious reasons..

You can't even touch coconuts? Usually if you are allergic to something that you eat you can still touch it, or vice versa.

As for the snakes they should be fine, but I wouldn't use coconut fiber for bedding. It can be ingested a bit harder on the snake to digest than something like aspen. I take no chances and use newspaper or paper towels myself.

I can't touch any part of it. I break out in massive rashes that take weeks to clear up, sometimes bad enough to need steroid cream/pills. Its an all-together bad scene.

I'd love to be able to at least touch it. That way I could get rid of it. He also put it in the Carpet Python's tank. I've just decided to say whatever to that. He can clean her cage.

I'll make sure that it gets changed before I try and feed him again anyways. I'm hoping that after getting some tail he'll get his appetite back.

    Thanks :)

People don't always have to eat something to have an allergic reaction. I've seen people just smell things their allergic to and have a reaction. It really just depends on how severe your body reacts to it. For some people its just a rash, for others its a life threatening event called anaphylaxis.

Just some extra info for future reference. :)

Exactly. A friend of mine is so allergic to shellfish, she can't even be in the same room with it - her throat closes up immediately and we have to break out the epi-pen.... Allergies can be quite dangerous!

I'd make my boyfriend (or hubby in my case :P) sleep on the recliner. To heck with a sofa...... :D

If you are THAT allergic, make sure the snakies get a bath after the bedding change, and make sure the tubs get washed out between old bedding and new.

I'm that way with christmas trees, and what did my girlfriend get a few weeks ago... that's right. I've had a lovely rash ever since. (The tree was removed after about 5 minutes)

I can't blame her, its never came up and this is the first christmas we've lived together through.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is I feel your pain.

:) Yup. Luckily I only have one small little rash on my arm, that hasn't gotten bigger. I'm making Mr Forgetful (cause this has come up, quite frequently..His family loves putting coconut into everything they make :/) do EVERYTHING. Including buying new bedding for pretty much everybody.

I hate christmas trees. What a waste of a good tree. Then the cats knock it over, and there's ornaments all over the place...yeah I'd rather not. I just string christmas lights over the tv or over the top of the snakes. Just as festive, not much mess. :P
Good luck on your itchy situation. Betadine will save your life.
