taping up holes on tubs

I read quite often that people talk about starting with less holes, because its easier to add more than to tape them up. This leads me to assume that people DO tape up some holes when it is neccessary such as during really dry seasons.

Now, I just also noted that it says NEVER use tape inside an enclosure. So how do you tape up holes in an enclosure if you don't put tape in an enclosure?

I presume taping from outside is worse because then the holes have the stick part exposed to the snake.

I haven't ever seen anyone post that they tape up holes in the tubs. I have replaced tubs that I got too "hole-happy" with. They don't cost enough to offset the risk of my snakes getting stuck to tape.

How to tape up holes.

Tape over them from the outside. If any snake can manage to get parts of his body stuffed down into one of the little vent holes he is a talented snake indeed.

If you're still concerned that he's going to be able to do it, you can easily cover the tape from the inside with the fine dusty stuff that sifts out of almost any aspen substrate. I don't bother. Even the uber insane Darth Jackass hasn't managed to tape himself to the half dozen holes I covered over on the front of his bin.

I taped mine up. My holes are the size of BB's but I still thought "he could get his tongue stuck to it if it happened to go through a hole". So on the outside I used tinfoil "it was the only thing around at the time" and put it over the hole, and then put the tape over that, that way there is no sticky to get stuck on.

What about his tongue?

Also, I got newspaper as substrate. I have a thermometer probe on the hot spot in EVERY tub (NOT THERMOSTAT PROBE!!! LOL!) I noticed that the reading is very different when the heat end of the probe goes up or down so as I was testing the temps I taped the thermometer probe cable down on the newspaper. (THERE ARE NO SNAKES IN THERE YET! YAY!) So, for those of you who also use thermometers in the tubs, how do you secure them onto the newspaper? (YES I HAVE A TEMP GUN TOO but want to check with a glance sometimes instead of disturbing the snakes by pulling the tubs out every 20 mins).

they can pull the tip of their tongue off it, there's like no surface area for the adhesive to hold onto unless your drilling massive holes.

but if your still paranoid about it, throw some dust on the holes, now the adhesive sticks to the dust. problem solved.

So far it hasn't been a problem. Masking tape really isn't that sticky and I suspect that snake's tongues are damp, just like everything elses.

Thanks guys for the reply, how about securing the thermometer probe to the newspaper? How do you do that without tape? Do you cut a hole and thread it through?

If you're worried about taping the outside of the tub, you could always put a small square of tape and attach it to the longer piece of tape to keep the area exposed in the hole smooth like the non-adhesive side of the tape. Does that make sense? You know like when you stick tape together, except only stick it to the area where it's exposed....

Trying to describe what I mean isn't as easy as I thought lol.
