I wanna start breeding feeders any tips?

Hey all!

I built a little rack system for feeders a while ago and tryed breeding but it was just to much at the time but I want to try again. Just looking for any tips.

Like what ratios do you guys out there use, like how many males for how many females and when to pull out the pregnant females to put into the nursery rack and whatever else you guys might think I should know.

Pretty simple really. I do 1.5 and pull the pregnant females when they look pregnant. I clean every 5 days so I rarely have a mom pop in the breeding tub. I try to check on mine once a day to take care of potential problems with the watering system or whatever else. Hope this helps.

Thanks man! One more question...

How long do I keep the mom with the pups?
I hear some people do 21 days but thank some people do 17 days. Like what's worse to take them early or to leave them in to long.
I don't really see what's so bad about leaving them with the mom longer than they need to be, like what can go wrong if I do that.

Yeah very true. If you're doing it on a small scale and are willing to keep track of days do that if it works for you. I don't have a ton but I have about 25 moms in maternity tubs per week and when I clean I just move the moms out when I think the litter can eat solid food. They may still be nursing but also eating. They're usually about small rats when I move them and I'll put them in grow out maternity sized tubs so they can reach the food. So basically I just go by size rather than time. There's no problem leaving the litter in with the mom besides that she won't be back in the breeding rotation ASAP.

That really depends on your snakes. I don't really feed bigger than smalls even with my adult snakes. I love chunky pups and rats that stay with mom longer hold more fat and grow faster. If you take too early they grow slower in my experience. I prefer feeding smaller higher fat content meals more frequently than big meals less often. I've just had better experience with the snakes eating more consistantly. I usually go at least 3 weeks but closer to 4 before pups are weaned. I also seperate moms and just go by the look. Once in a blue moon a mom pops before I catch it but that's very infrequent. When this happens it's usually a smaller litter. I typically rotate moms around but I prefer 1.4 in my breeding tubs. Crowding leads to more stress and more mess. Good luck!
