Siring

Do people ever pay a commission to others with a male that they would like to breed with? I don't want to breed, and I will get the snakes that I want regardless of whether I can get anything back out of them, but it would be a good bonus for getting one of the higher priced snakes. When I was a kid I remember my dad getting a commission for allowing his schnauzer to sire puppies with another purebred, and I was wondering if people did that with snakes as well.

From what I'v seen, people usually work out something based on the clutch (first pick, second pick, etc.), or the owner of the male gets to keep the breeder female in exchange for the whole clutch. It really depends on what each breeder wants out of the deal, but I haven't heard of anyone simply paying a stud fee for breeding, probably because there isn't any guarantee on what will hatch (usually). A Schnauzer and Schnauzer are going to sire Schnauzers; a Pied x Super Pastel het pied can produce a wide range of animals (in value, especially).

In My Opinion (and it is just that) as far as I am concerned, no I will NEVER sire out my males. I had a close friend ask about it and I even told her no. If I want to build a project I will go out and BUY the male for it. It is TOO high of a risk for my snake to leave my sight, because while $400 may not seem like a lot to you, it was a HUGE investment for me. And in a kind of snotty way I feel like - if you cant afford to buy what you need for your project? You can WAIT just like I did. but that is only my two cents :twocents:

I was just considering the possibility that someone might not necsessarily want the type of snake that it would take to create something that they were going for- I don't know why that would ever happen, but it could, people are weird. This is a mostly hypothetical question, I'm only curious about what people do with their snakes. If something came up, I would consider it, (particularly if it was someone I knew and trusted- and only then) but I wouldn't go looking for anything. I just have no interest in the breeding game myself... I didn't mean to offend, and $400 is def a lot of money for me too!

I have an albino male, while he doesnt cost close to what some bp do, I wouldnt loan him out. I couldnt replace him if something went wrong and he died. Wouldnt be the same snake even if the same color.

Typically, the female would be sent to the male for the season. This way, the owner of the male knows he isn't being bred to more females than agreed upon, and can still breed him to their own females.

You'd want that female then a long time before season for quarentine
