When does the locks count?

I've got this YB pair im trying to breed (my first season) and in the beginning of the cooling in october I saw two confirmed locks. But lately, the male seems to have lost intrerest.

I've read that the breeding really starts after the cooling ends? If that's the case, I guess I don't have to worry. Atleast not yet.

Breedign is all year long. Cooling or not cooling wont start or stop them.


I dont drop temps at all and i get weeks where everyone locks, then where no one locks. Pairing during storms helps as well as cold fronts too. Only takes ONE lock to do the job, as they retain sperm for up to 2 years.

To add on I find that when the male or female are getting ready to go into shed they won't lock.

Actually this only refers to males, because I saw females locking when they were blue :). It actually happened to me a couple of days ago ;).

The locks count when they lock. There really is no telling what lock "does the job". I can say though, the locks are really pointless until a certain follicle size is reached. I don't really remember what size but I know folks that that have untrasounds don't pair until a set follicle size is reached.

10-20mm in size is when they begin to POUND FOOD.

30 is when most pair up if they have ultrasound. And 40 is around time they ovulate.

Not absolutely true for females. I actually find my females are more receptive during a shed cycle. My males will breed in the early stages of blue, but, when they are deep in blue...forget it.

The breeding at my place seems to peak in January (when I have been cooling for a couple months already) and females tend to ovulate when the temps com back up in February or later. Some will ovulate during the cooling period and it is critical to provide those girls a hot spot to cook their eggs during development.

This year I have 2 pairings going on. I have normal x spider and another pair normal x spider. As far as when does the lock count? My male nor the females now have any interest in each other. My females are becoming increasingly larger by the week and now by the day and the male has no interest in them. That's what I'm going by. I'm been putting the pairs together on 5 days off 3 days for about 2 1/2 months. Hopefully what I have done is going to produce me some lil ones, so far all the signs are pointing in that direction.
1. Tons of locks that lasted for days on end
2. Females growing larger by the day
3. No interest between the opposite sexes toward each other anymore
So I'm basically doing the opposite of what I did last year, which was my first try at breeding. Last year I was crazy worrying and I didn't get any lil ones. This year I got a bunch of help from people here on Bp about relax and keep them together and let them be and wala, totally different, in snakes and me :) Good Luck!

i only got one lock it lasted 28 hours now my male that bred wants nuthing to do with her she is coiled up on one side of the tub and he is on the other what does that mean

That means exactly what they are showing you...They want a break from each other. Seperate them and pair them up in a week or so. Don't stress, they are going to breed as long as you keep em clean and feed them well. Husbandry is very important also. Don't worry about spinning your wheels too much, they have one purpose in life---->Make babies.
