What kind of rats do I have (video)?
I've been breeding rats for a while now and I've always just called them feeders.

I've been hearing some terms like "dumbo" "berkshire" and "hooded" lately.

What kind of rats do I have and how do I tell?

The ones in the bottom tub are black eyed whites.
Dumbo refers to the ears, the top tub rats are top eared and not dumbo, some in the bottom looked dumbo, but I couldn't quite tell.

Dumbo eared rat, notice how low on the head the ears are...

To help with your production, ditch the food your using..

Kaytee is just a filler for pets, not good for breeders at all. Get your hands on a quality lab block and ust supplement the seeds in 1-2 times a week to mix up their diet.

You will notice your females will recover faster after litters

I only feed 1-2 blocks per bowl and the rest is Regal Rat + seeds. I've read plenty of reviews and from what I have found Regal rat is the best.

I thought black eyed whites were pure white with black eyes?

The black markings on the face are referred to as "masked" rats. :)

Masked rats are black eyed whites ;)

The over spotting gene, or BEW or black eyed white means that the gene covers up the coloring on the rat, or tries to and fails in many cases, which is why you don't usually get all white BEW's.
When we breed BEW X BEW we get about half or less all white BEW's and the rest are marked, as in masked or otherwise.

Also BEW can come in any color, we've produced agouti masked, black masked and blue masked.

Oxbow Regal Rat is an excellent food for rats that are 8months and older, but with breeding females and babies, make sure you're providing enough fat and protein for milk production. With the supplemented seeds, you're adding some fat, and probably fine, but just a heads up =) Regal Rat smells like apples... yum!

Dude, I NEED some of your rats. They're all so freaking cute! :rage: I can never find cute rats like that.

Also thanks for the information. That makes a lot of sense, given that white rats tend to lack pigment.
