Snake Hooks

Does anyone know where I can get a reasonably priced snake hook to use with ball pythons? We have broke 2 of the ones from Petsmart. It works great for the babies but after they reach 300+ grams, they break. I would like to have one that I can use for an adult ball python. Thanks for any recommendations!

Stay away from those small collapsible hooks if you've got ball pythons. I got mine at a reptile show. It's a solid, one-piece, aluminum snake hook that I got for $20. It's similar to this one: http://lllreptile.com/store/catalog/...24-snake-hook/

In a pinch, I just use a wire hanger that I've folded in the form of a snake hook. Incidentally, I never pick up my ball pythons with the hook. I merely stroke them on the head with it to let them know it's not feeding time, and pick them up with my hands. If they're in an especially ornery mood, I'll just use it under their neck, while using my free hand to support the body. Ball Pythons being heavy bodied snakes, I wouldn't use a hook to solely pick them up with.

We only use a hook on feeding day. We have always fed our snakes in different containers and use the hook to move them from their tank to the feeding container. I guess it makes us feel better knowing there is no confusion doing it this way. The snakes all seem to know that the hook means it's feeding time. This is the only time we use it and I use my hands also to support them. The hook is more towards their head and I support the body with my hand. But the other day, my husband used the hook only and it broke. Thank God the snake didn't get hurt (she didn't fall far). I'll check out that link Markie, thanks for posting it. Those hooks from Petsmart are cheaply made and we need something with a better quality.

Well even though it's not needed, a cheap rig I use for field herping and log flipping is a short paint roller. You just have to be careful when removing the plastic roller component, so you don't make any sharp edges on the metal. I've also seen people cover the metal with surgical tubing. Cheap and easy, and you can keep one in your car!

As a side note, I used to feed in different containers and have come to find it unnecessary. Just a thought!
