where do you get your feeders?

I'm sure a lot of you breed your own feeders, but I just don't have space to do that :(

do you guys know of any place to get cheap and quality rodent feeders for your collection? i'm planning on expanding my collection soon so i'm going to need a lot of rodents lol :D

also, i don't really want to store them with the food i have in my freezer lol. I already do that, but the small amount of rodents i have are triple plastic bagged... >_>..

My best advice to you is find a local breeder who sells f/t or buy from your nearest reptile show. Not always cheaper than online sources per rat but you save on shipping, given that your travel cost isn't too

Looking on craislist is a good start, as well as browsing forums. Took me a while to find a local guy near me, met him at a reptile show. Good luck!

The most cost efficient thing to do is raise your own. However, you need space and time. Space for the racks and time to clean, feed and care for the rats. They are more work than snakes. They also smell. So, I would not suggest keeping them in the house.

The next best thing is to buy frozen. I've heard good things about Big Cheese Rodent Factory. They pack their rodents in vacuum sealed bags, which helps prevent freezer burn and prolongs shelf life. It would also help you with the perception of frozen rats near food. I have not ordered from them before, but will probably do so on my next rodent order. The only thing I don't like about them is you have to call, no on-line ordering system.

Yeah, I wouldn't be able to raise my own. I considered it, and I asked the others living at my house (sister and her fiance) and both said they aren't comfortable with it.. I'm looking more towards frozen.. How long can you keep the rodents frozen until they're no good?

I asked around for awhile to find a quality local breeder in Tucson, AZ through Tom's Rodent Ranch. I'm very happy with his service and quality of rodents, great pricing as well.

Vacuum sealed rats can last for up to a year, or so I'm told. Mine are never around that long.

I've ordered from Big Cheese. Totally happy!! You can email them your order if you don't want to call.

As for storing, I've heard 6 months on frozen. Dont know how vacuum sealing chsnges it, but mine never last that long You can also buy a small freezer to keep them in if you want to keep them away from your food. I found one on Craigslist for $50 and keep it in my garage.

I've been buying my frozens from rodentpro.com since 2008 and haven't had any problems. I was scared on my first order because it was the middle of summer in Florida but, much to my surprise, they arrived frozen solid. The only thing is I have to buy at least a good amount to make it worth it, the first $50 or so goes towards shipping. Just order enough to fill the box(but not go over or it'll increase shipping cost) and you'll get awesome prices. It's also nice cause they have "hot deals" on surplus all the time. Like right now.. You can buy 100 rat pinkies(24 cent each), 100 rat fuzzies(49 cent each) and 100 medium rats(1.24 each) all for $251 shipped!
