New breeder advice

Ok I'm thinking of starting a small scale breeding project but I'd love your advice. I have a male spider & was wondering should I get 2 normal females & one other male morph (like pastel, pied, or whatever I like) so i don't go overboard. For those that breed what things you know now you wish you knew then?

If you are just looking to produce one to two clutches, I would probably pick up one or two female morphs instead of the normals and another male. You could get a nice pastel female and make bees with your spider or pretty much any other morph and still make nice combos.

This is just my first season, but what I wish I knew before I got my second BP was how addicting ball python morphs are. When I first started and got my first morph (my male spider) I only had my normal female. Then I started looking into the morphs and realized you can breed a spider to a pastel and get bees. It really just snowballed from there. I have plans for things I want to hold back already as well and this is from pairing that won't happen until at least next year but probably not until 2013. :rolleyes:

You really don't need another male because you can breed the spider boy to 2 girls just fine. Last year was my first year and I only bred normal girls to get my feet wet. You can pick them up almost anywhere for really little money. This allows you to get a couple nice young female morphs to grow for the next couple years. We bought a bunch of female morphs early on in my collection, some of which will breed this season and more next season. Getting the normal breeder girls allows you to gain experience in breeding, incubation, hatchling care, etc. As Kinra said its addicting. 3 years ago we bought our first BP, now 51. Last year we had 33 babies from 4 clutches and this season if all the girls go this year we'll have 15 clutches. Good luck and have fun.

I would say to get maybe a normal and a morph female to get started. The normal will help you get started and give the female morph more time to grow. The best advice I can give you is practice good quarantine and most of all PATIENCE. You can't rush this. It takes time to do it right. Also have fun.
