    first timer advice
Started breeding rats about 18 days ago and I am starting to see the baby rats eat food BUT NOT DRINK WATER (i dont think they can reach it) so I put in a pet water bottle so they can reach it my question is how do you wean the rats do you just take away the mother and leave her out or is there a system ex. out for two days back in for one...... also what should i be watching on the babies to make sure they are weaning properly. Thank you

If the pups are already eating solid food regularly, you can separate them from mom.

You don't have to put mom in or out.

Sometimes they just want to suckle even though they don't need it and are weaned. It's like how kids still want their pacifier even though they don't drink from bottles anymore.

As long as they're eating solids and drinking water, they're fine. If they're not, keep them with mom for a little longer. Maybe another week or so and see how they are with food then.
