how much gap is ok?

So Im going to redo my XPVC rack. I have a couple bins that are to tight to use. How much of a gap is ok to have between the top of the tub and the bottom of the next shelf. This will be for adult female balls.

I used a couple of cd's as spacers when building the rack. :)

Thats what I did but ended up with 2 that are too tight to use. I ask because Im gonna try to use a router and groove out where the shelf is gonna go

I've had good luck with a 1/8th" (0.125 inch) gap
