Do you put your rat block on top of the screen or in the cage?

I put it in the cage. They love the mazuri and hate the Doggy Bag.

Mostly on top of the mesh. I think they waste much less of the food that way.
However, bins with babies getting to weaning stage get a scoop of FRM food in the bin(it's softer and crumbles and seems easier for the babies to eat). Also, Gimpy's bin gets a scoop in the bin since without front feet, he has issues getting food through the mesh.
The newer rack has only tiny mesh though, so all those need scoops of food in the bin. Those are my grow-out bins anyway though, so since it's littles, they couldn't reach the mesh if it was larger.

Weaned and adults on top of the mesh
Pups and starting to wean rats get a handful in the tubs whenever needed

What size mesh for ones on top? I got 1/4th inch and I think it's too small.
I guess I could always cut out a hopper and weave in larger mesh???

On top of the hard wired cloth. The rats just waste it if you put in the cage by peeing/pooping on it.

In the bin. I think less food gets wasted that way, because less of it just gets ground up and falls through the mesh.

I've got 1/2 inch and it works fine with dog food

The 1/2 inch mesh works well for me with the lab block.
You can cut a square out, then wire a slightly larger piece of the larger mesh over top of it. Just make certain there's no hanging down bits(don't accidentally bend any parts downward) so that your bin can still slide in and out freely.
