is back heating a rack bad?

I want to build my own rack but dont want to daisy cain multiple flexwat sheets together... I dont want my house to catch on fire lol.

If the room temps are warm enough, yes - back heat is fine.

If not, you will need belly heat to provide sufficient heat.

Maybe someone can chime in as to what the room temp cut off is - I only use belly heat.

x2, and I believe if you want to do back heat, the room needs to be at least 80 and never below that.

My rack uses one piece of flexwat winding in an S pattern between each level. Seemed a pretty simple fix for belly heat.

In the end...I really don't think the snake cares what or where the source of its warmth is. If your heat source can maintain a proper gradient throughout the enclosure, then it doesn't really matter if it's "belly" or "back."

I agree. Two of my racks are belly heat, and one is back heat. I had to move the probe off the flexwatt in order to keep the back heat tub up to temp. My belly heat racks are just fine. I haven't turned on my space heater yet, so that will help. Back heat is nice because you don't have to cut a bunch of strips and you don't have to worry about the tubs sliding across the flexwatt and ruining it. As far as only using back heat in rooms that are hot, my room is only 65-70 right now. I had to move the prove to side of the top shelf, but it's keeping the tubs up to temp.
