    discolored scales after mites
I got a small male pie recently, along with 3 others, and at least one had mites. So far they have not been to bad, I have only been able to find a couple here and there, and have sprayed them and their cages down a few times. Mites are a separate issue, but I mention it because it may be related to my actual question, as to what the discolored scales are that I am seeing now. They were not there when I got him, and now are getting worse. I don't know if it could be related to the treatment, or the mites directly, or something else.

    Hi,

That looks like the top layer of the individual scales came off in the last shed.

If that's the case then it should correct itself with the next good shed.

If you have mites get Provent-a-mite.

You need to follow the instructions exactly but it is hands down the best for getting rid of them.

I was able to find prevent a mite at a reptile store, and they recommended to also use Reptile relief on the snake, and prevent a mite on the furniture and cage. Should I use the reptile relief on the snake with these scales? (currently I'm thinking not)

Also, I have only been able to find about 4 mites so far, so they are not really bad.

    Hi,

I'd probably just use a bath of 86f water with a spot of dish soap in it to drown them.

Check around the snakes eye sockets and heat pits as well as the vent - the little beggars get everywhere.

You also need to treat all the enclosures of any other reptiles you have as mites travel a fair distance to find food and lay eggs.

One more warning - P.A.M. is extremely potent stuff.

Any insects or spiders etc have to be removed from the rooms being treated or it will kill them.

Do not ignore the warning about removing the waterbowls and snakes before treating the enclosure.

one last thing... I was soaking 4 snakes, individually, while cleaning cages and letting them dry, and one pooped in the water. This looked kinda weird to me. I have not looked at others in the water so it may be normal, but is something wrong with this??

    Hi,

What kind of substrate do you use? And do you feed in the snakes enclosure?

Did you put anything else on the snake?

Like olive oil or mineral oil?

I did not put anything else on them, just soaked in water.

substrate is just indoor outdoor carpet, no way for them to eat any of it. Yes I do feed them in there.

I have not feed them since spraying the carpet (and letting it dry)

oh, I do have a humid hide with sphagnum moss in there though, I guess he could have pulled the last meal into there, and gotten some of that now that I think of it....
