A piece of me has been burnt away...
Yesterday, my cottage caught on fire.
Apparently something to do with the wood burning stove and perhaps it was over-filled, or something. I really don't know.

My mom called me and told me this morning. A really, really big shock.

My grandfather must have put too much wood in the wood-burning stove, and it got out of control.
My grandmother has parkinsons (among other problems), and isn't mobile at all. If my grandfather had left to go visit the garden like he had intended to, she'd be gone too.

I've spent a significant amount of time at my cottage throughout my life, and I guess it feels like a piece of me is gone now. That cottage was built by my grandfather's bare hands 50 years ago.

    Sigh.

At a time like this - all you can do is focus on the positives like both your grandparents made it out okay.

The cottage can be rebuilt some day.

    Everyone's okay.
I don't think I'd be able to type this if my grandmother had perished in the fire. It's one of those "what if he actually did go to the garden at that time".
    I'd be hysterical.

We're all really glad that everyone's okay, but I live far away from home, and I just want to be back home at a time like this! My sister also lives in New Brunswick (she actually just moved there this week end) and she's going to be blown away by the news too.

I have an exam tomorrow, and an important debate, and I can't focus on anything.

    :(

When it rains, it pours, eh?

    Just an update on this:

I came here (to my parents house) yesterday to visit and get my passport and other travel things sorted, and I found some pictures of the cottage.

I was looking at them at 2am just in awe. It's absolutely 100% gutted. Only thing left are the floors (except for what was surrounding the fireplace). No ceilings, our BRAND NEW (about 2 years old) roof is gone, ceilings are gone, nothing is left but the shell (the supporting 2x4s or whatever). It was pretty dang overwhelming.

    :(

Well. Here's where rebuilding starts. Just going to have to build up new memories in this new cottage!
