Can to much Humidity be a problem?

I havent gotten around to getting something to take humidity readings in the snake room yet, I have a small humidifer which stays on all the time in the room.

Im wondering if the humidity was to high, if it could cause problems for the health of my BP's?

it can cause a respiratory infection, since you dont have a gauge, keep an eye out for wheezing/whistling, breathing with the mouth open, mucous and/or bubbles in/around the mouth. there might be more signs, but ive never seen an RI in person so im not sure. also if the substrate is too wet it can cause belly rot, or scale rot, and from what ive heard i think it starts out pink? im sure someone else can give you more specifics, but you should definitly get a gauge when you can

Onlything it will cause problems is bacteria growth and or problems with the scales with rotting.


High humidity will not cause RI in a healthy snake. Considering when one does have a RI, the treatment involves Raising the humidity to ease breathing while on meds.

Actually, high humidity is good for respiratory infections. The biggest problem you will have with high humidity is scale rot, but that's really only a concern if the substrate is damp or wet for extended periods (more than a few days).

Depending on your heat source, the humidity in the cage is probably quite a bit less than the ambient room humidity.

Hmm. Im curious. If you have low humidity could that cause your snake to shed more frequently? Because i know that I have been having problems with my humidity.

Frequent shedding is either due to growth,mites or a skin problem trying to heal with each shed.

RI is caused by bacteria and/or fungi. High humidity accelerate bacteria and fungi growth, low air flow added to this generate higher than normal concentrations and lower immune response in animals in general that gives RI a foot hold. Humidity and poor ventilation are documented factors in RI cases.
