Breeding question from those with experience

In your experience is one lock enough? I have a male first year breeder and he had bred three females so far. I am putting him with a female for three days and resting him for three days. He is still eating once a week. All three females he has locked up with within hours of being placed together. After the first lock with both the first and second female he was given a break and showed no interest when placed back with them. He is locked with the third female now for the first time so I don't know if he will show interest in her the second time around or not. All of the locks have been 15 plus hours.

Never bank on anything. Keep cycling him through with the females the entire season. Obviouslly you want to give him breaks and offer him small meals to keep his energy up. If he cuts totally off feed for a long period i would give him an extended break especially being a young breeder. Males will literally breed themselves into bad health if you let them.

Technically all it takes is once, but if he didn't lock with her at the right time then she's not going to produce anything. It's really early in the season so don't worry about not seeing locks right now. Keep pairing until you see eggs.
