    can i use wood shavings for substrate???
    hey i have seen a few websites keeping ball pythons on the same wood shavings as mice/rat beddiing is it safe to use for our snakes???as i have tones of shavings spare as i stocked up when i got my rats for breeding


    any advice will be gratefull thanks

    Aspen and Cypress are the most common wood shavings that people keep BP's on.

    You cannot use Pine or Ceder as they are toxic to BP's (and pretty much all reptiles).

    As long as you only stick to aspen or cypress; as the others have said, pine and cedar are toxic.

    If using shavings, either feed in a separate container or monitor the snake as he feeds to make sure he doesn't swallow any. What I did was use my feeding hemostat to pull any off the food item or out of his mouth if he accidentally picked one up in the process - it didn't seem to bother him. I'm using paper towels now, though.
