Lucky has a friend now
For anyone who hasn't seen my other thread, I have a pet rat named Lucky, who was bought as a live fuzzie to attempt to feed my picky baby ball python. I have since learned that she will only eat live mice, so Lucky survived the night in the snakes tub, so I decided to keep him. I bottle fed him, and now he's a fat happy rat living in an awesome 3 story enclosure.
I work a lot, and I've heard rats are very social (he is with me and my family anyways) and I always feel bad leaving him alone for 8-16 hours. So I decided to pick up another feeder rat to save. He caught my eye in the tank full of "weaned rats", but before I could look under his tail to see if he was male, he leaped out of my hands and dove back into the pile of baby rats. I looked at a couple others but kept going back to this one, I finally warned him "I promise...you want to come with me" lol. It seemed like after I said that he calmed down and actually let me pet him without jumping.
He doesn't have a name yet, and he'll be quarantined for a couple weeks. I snapped this picture in the car and actually gave him a bath when we got home because he smelled, so this is the only picture I have, but he'll be Lucky's roomate soon lol. His eyes are really cool too, they look black but under the light they are red :)

I really like rats. They are likely the best of the small mammals people keep. That is a cute little guy.

Awwww! How cute! Lucky is well, very "lucky" to have such a good rattie momma like you! I'm sure he and the new rattie will get along just fine.

That is awesome! They really are cool, _they're like dogs when you come home; they jump up and down and want your attention

...one of the reasons I can't feed live... I'd want to keep them all as pets!
Nice rescue!

I've always thought the same thing, especially when I first started. I always said if I EVER get a snake that won't eat f/t, they're getting sold. But, after 8 other snakes, I finally got one that refused every f/t prey for 6 weeks. She was losing weight and I had no other choice. Unfortunately, it's the luck of the draw. I brought home a pet rat today, and then fed off 4 hopper mice to her :tears: I love all critters, but some of them are meant to be food I guess. Hopefully after a few months of eating consistently for me and gains some weight I'll attempt switching her to f/t.

He is not a rescue, but a pet from the pet store :P

I often thought about trying to switch over to f/t. Maybe I will pick some up at the upcoming expo to try!

Re: Lucky has a friend now
that is one lucky rat, most rats only dream of having a three story enclosure:gj:

Yay! I'm so glad you got him friend. My rats all have so much fun playing with each other when I'm not around.
