How many times until you give up?
Right now, because of a cold front, I have my wild caught girl and my lesser boy out on a date. ;) She's had clutches before, but my lesser's previous owner hasn't had any luck with breeding him. I'm hoping to do a little better, lol.

So out of curiosity, how many times will you pair without seeing a lock before you give up and try a different male/female combo?

I would keep cycling him and if theres still doubt go ahead and cycle male number 2 in with her as well and keep alternating them all the way through till ya see either the mid body lump in her or there is no more breeding intrest at all. Ive had males in with girls for months before hitting payday

    How big/old is the male?

I usually pair until Ovi or April/May, I have some females laying eggs even though I have never observed any locks (some are sneaky ;))

And remember it is still VERY early in the season some animals do not show any interest at this point.

And if you really think the male might be one of those picky breeder you can use a few tricks that will help.

He's an '07, and she's an '06. We had a really nice cold front come through with a lot of rain so I thought I'd give it a try, lol.

Patience will be your best friend, pairing can and usually does take many months.
As mentioned it's very early in the season, last season I didn't get much action til December and I started this week last year.
11 out of 13 females ended up gravid and giving up eggs this past season, patience is the key and just keeping them on feed as long as possible during the breeding season.

I'll definitely keep cycling him in, lol. I know she's a breeder and I'm hoping he proves to be too!

He's certainly old enough! I am going through this with a male right now, but he is young. Just see what happens as the season progresses. As Deb said...The season is still early.
