Baby Rats, what kind are they?
Ok, I know there are alot of rat breeders out there. I started breeding my own rats to offset the cost of buying them, and to have them on hand to feed hatchlings. The breeders I know don't care what the breeds are as long as they produce. I know I have a lot of mixed breeds. What do I hold back to breed out of what you see in the pics, and what kind are they? I have more pregos ready to drop anytime, so I will post more pics later.
    Thanks for any help!

I dont see anything special Yet. This stage its hard as rats true colors happen with molts.

But i do see mostly solids and hoodeds. could have something with the white ones later on being siamese, but hard to tell at this stage.

Yeah, I don't see anything special yet either. Berkshires and hoodeds-not the greatest examples of hoodeds. My guess is that the white ones will be albinos (PEWs). As for colors, I see black and one agouti. Time will only tell, but that's what I see.

Oh, and there aren't different breeds, just colors/patterns.

I misspoke when I said breeds. I meant color/variety. I know some are more pron to problems, such as megacolon.

nothing you have suggests a trait of mega colon...
    yours are just normals....

megacolon is not as bad as alot of people make it out to be. if you start getting it, cull the parent, and move on....

No problem ;) Megacolon usually only pops up when you breed two high white parents together. For example a capped and a capped (rats with color only on the head. I've only had it pop up a couple times in my colony and a lot of my rats would be considered high white. You'll know if you have megacolon. It looks like the baby rat ate two of its siblings whole.

It really doesn't matter what you hold back as long as the parents are healthy and the kittens you hold back are healthy.

Otherwise you should keep whatever your favorite colors are, lol. I keep rats that have unusual markings, as well as solid blues, blacks and tans. :) I also breed siamese, but they get fed off like all the others unless they are exceptional and worth breeding.

If you want to sell any on the side as pets, solid colors seem to be most popular. Usually tan rats are pretty desirable, though blues and siamese are popular as well. Nobody buys black hooded rats or albinos (pink eyed whites), and solid black rats aren't very popular either.

    Agouti blacks PEW?

I find that variegated patterns with nice clean blacks do get bought as pets often. They are striking to see! A deep black that keeps it dark it highly desired for breeders who enjoy solids.

I have had requests for solids, hairless, siamese and rex. The only one of these that i don't have is hairless... and I don't care to either. LOL
