hey all can you breed ball pythons any time of the year??

hey all im from the uk and some local breeders have got eggs all year round

is it wise to breed ball pythons any time of the year and how many of you have tyred breeding any time of the year

Females are only ready to breed once a year. That time of year can vary.

so i take it you cant just lower temps and trick them into breeding season??

I don't lower any tempts. They can breed at anytime as long as they ready.

I have read that BP's have been bred at all times of the year, but I was curious as to if it was harder when its "off season"? I see people with fresh hatchlings all year round seems like, so is it safe to say that breeder size BP's will breed anytime of the year if you put them together? Does it help if they are in a rack system with no real light cycles or anything? Would you have to drop temps to "fool" them into season if it wasnt actual season? Any info will be greatly appreciated...:)

So you just keep track of when your females produce folicles and put males to them the same time each year?

Pretty much, I start feeling for follicles monthly beginning in Nov., Once I determine that they are building follicles, I start putting the male(s) in.

Thats the joy of controlled temps. As many will argue to cool or not to cool the facts are that ball pythons breeding in the wild are regulated by temperature and photo period. In the wild as the temps start dropping at night this stimulates breeding season. In the wild this occures in the fall through the winter so it was thought that was the only time to breed. But now that so much work has been done with captive breeding you can do this anytime of the year. Dropping temps helps breeding and folicle development. I have 3 sets of girls i breed. The first group cools first of october, the second group cools in january, the third group cools in april. Those same females will cool at the same times the next season. I reuse certain males as long as they are not breeding too many girls. And i add other males in the mix as needed. Males as long as they are feeding on small meals during breeding regain stamina pretty quick so its not as stressful for them.as it is for females.

My male pastel has gone off feed for the season but my spider is still eating. I wished that the pastel wasnt off feed because I dont currently have any girls to put him to and he is fasting for no reason. I am trying to get some ladies for them, but unexpected bills keep popping up! :)
