What do people do with there normal hatchlings
I was wondering what people ended up doing with there normal hatchling ball pythons? This will be my first year breeding and am not sure how people end up getting rid of all their normals. Do you guys just take them to pet stores? If so do you guys take them to big chains like petco, petsmart, etc. or do you take them to small mom and pop shops? also i've been hearing big breeders will cull their normals.... Do alot of people end up culling them? I don't want to produce an animal that would have to be culled I couldn't do that and don't want it to happen. so I'm wondering what alot of people are doing with there normals if you could let me know that'd be great thanks...

I know some people give normals away for free when someone purchases a pricier morph as well as give them to friends.

I sold some at a reptile show this year and the rest are going to a pet store that I like, as soon as they have room. The big chain type probably won't take them from you so I would try the mom pop places first

I wish people would stop spreading rumors about big breeders culling their normals! If you don't have proof, stop saying it! There has been no evidence brought to light to show that *ANY* breeder culls their normals. It's all "I heard ..." No proof. It makes big breeders look like money hungry sharks that don't care for their animals. I don't think that's true at all.

The fact that normals are imported by the thousands from Africa proves that there is a demand for normals that domestic breeders just can't fulfill. It's unlikely that breeders would cull their normals when they could get money from them, even if it's chump change.

Petco and Petsmart will not take you BP they have contracts with specific suppliers and sell CH.

Your best chance is find a local pet store specialized in reptiles if you have a large group of normals there are people online that will buy them. (Check on Kingsnake)

You can also use Ebay classified or sell them online but it will take you much longer to sell them.

I wholesale mine locally to a specialized reptile store I no longer sell on Ebay Classified or other local classified site (Not worth the hassle to me)

Re: What do people do with there normal hatchlings
I just want to say.... I've met a number of the biggest breeders out there...even had dinner in some of their homes. And not a single one that I've ever met would EVER intentionally cull a healthy animal just because it was "normal." These people don't get to be "big breeders" because the money is good...they get there because they LOVE animals. The road to being a "big breeder" is a very long and difficult one FULL of very hard work, heartbreaking times, and tons of poop.

I'm not saying there might not be individuals who found a shortcut into the money-side of the business and took it...who may not have the same love for animals and scruples for caring for them....but the vast majority of those we consider "big breeders"...those with recognizable names who have had great impacts on the herping hobby as we know it....would NOT cull healthy animals.

Normals may not be very helpful breeding wise (though many people use female normals, I plan to) but ball pythons in general still make great pets, so there's no real reason to get rid of them through culling. As stated earlier, they often can be given free with purchases or to friends, and you can still sell them through craigslist/ mom and pop shops/ etc. Not for much, but culling isn't necessary

as normals are cheap, they are great sellers on expos for people who just start with snakes or people want a few more breeding females
a normal male sells for about 15€ or 20$ so its great for starters

disclaimer: i dont have any bp's or breed any bp's myself(for now) but i know alot of breeders and from what i saw on expo's,so only based on my experience

Breeders who "cull" the normals.. That means, they sell them in lots to wholesalers or pet shops like mine... It does not mean they kill them!
I get calls this time of year from breeders looking to cull out the normals and hets...
Generally speaking they usually try to sell them in lots of 12-100, so they don't have to deal with selling individual snakes that are almost worth nothing in wholesale terms. Big wholesalers will buy huge lots of normals for as little as $5 each...

Petco/Petsmart, as a whole, they usually don't buy from individuals, but yes, some of them will buy, just depends on the store itself... I sell rats, mice and occasionally geckos and colubrids to one of the petcos, but the other won't buy from me... I sell them to a wholesaler, and they buy them from the wholesaler for twice the price, real smart, eh?
Other petcos will only buy from wholesalers...

As for "normals" being useless... WHAT??? Half my breeders are normal females.... pastels, spiders, bees, the list of what you breed to normals is endless....
