Not only that, but someone already put all the work into raising them.
Breeder female normals usually aren't that bad though, I seem them for $150-200 all the time (not including shipping).

Of course they are! Supply and demand. And as someone else mentioned, even selling a normal female breeder for $150 - $200 doesn't even come close to compensating what you put into her in food to raise her.
I picked up my first ball python in 2005. And "I" raised all my girls up from hatchlings myself, save 2 or 3 I stumbled across at a local pet store. And you know what? The ones I raised myself are the ones that give me the best sense of personal satisfaction when they produce for me.

Sure they are. Someone bought that snake and spent a minimum of 2-3 years feeding it and housing and cleaning up after it. If it's a morph it's going to cost you.
The person who is sells a breeder sized female is giving up the potential to produce a clutch of eggs in this season and seasons to come and selling the offspring for profit. That profit could run from a few hundred bucks to much more. I kinda think that when we see someone selling a breeder female we are thinking about what the initial cost of the female snake was and how much it cost him to raise to size, not the potential profit he is giving up when he sells it.
An adult female pastel almost certainly didn't cost someone $1000 to purchase and raise. But if the owner has a fire male or a pied male or any number of nice codom or multiple codom male's he is selling you an animal that has the potential to produce a clutch of combos or het morphs for him that net him much more than $1000, depending on the males he has available to breed to her. Like any other breeding animal, you are being sold not only the animal itself but a portion of the worth of it's potential offspring.

Normal breedable females were selling to close to $1000 just a few years ago. Now that more of us are moving out our normal females to replace with the morph females we've raised up, there are more available, so the price has come down. But it still has to make sense for us at a price point to even let the normal girls go. :)
