High temperatures tolerance in cresties husbandy....

Ok Here is a deal... I want lizard... and putting in the pull all pros and cons to the one basket....Cresties looks like a nice choice for me... (mostly because no smelly noisy crickets!!!!)
The main Question for me is high temperature tolerance in this specie.

Living in New York we get heat waves... this Year one was really tough. I had my heat in ball pythons rack cut off totally... because being at work and have AC shut down for time being ambient temps in my room get up to 88-90 F.

From care sheet I see That Cresties like it little cooler.. so...
How they will tolerate few hours Spikes of temp in summer in the future ? Is reaching 88-90 for 3-4 hours a day posing any danger to them ??

Way too hot, ideal range for cresties are low 70 to high 70 not more than that.

They are very intolerant when it comes to heat.

That's a bummer...
I live in old apartment... and range of temperatures between winter and summer is horrendous.. I cut heat in ball python rack for couple week off in summer.. and I know in winter will be few days when Thermostat will be cranked up to 110...

*sighs*.... Back to research... looks like i never will find ideal Lizard for me :tears:

85 for three or four hours wouldn't kill 'em, especially if it's only one week out of the year.

78 is a pretty ideal summer temperature.

88-90 8-12 hrs a day all summer long, you're definitely looking at problems for MANY species, not just cresties.

We get the same heat spikes here in SW PA and more frequent mistings , sometimes a couple of bottles of ice water outside the enclosures or a regular fan take care of the issues :D

So taking to account my environmental Issues...
With type of caging will be better.. glass one (like Zilla naturalistic terrarium) or mesh one ??

I have mine split between glass for the larger ones, a tote bin for a breeding pair and critter keepers for juvies ..... they tend to keep the humidity better than mesh ones

I bought a a 37 gallon aquarium off of craigslist for my adult male. It was an aquarium for fish so it came with everything. I just used mesh to cover up the hole for the water pump and filter and then used wing hinges because the plastic lid hinges were broken. And put a lock so he can't get out.

If you can find a glass aquarium or vivarium off craigslist that'll save you some $$. I paid $50 for mine and then cleaned every inch with a bristled brush.

I'm in Texas so we have heat too. My house is around 76 24/7, but if the I ever have any issues with heat I have some computer fans I can wire up to increase the airflow. His cage temps during the day are around 74 and at night it drops down to 72.

Have you looked at Italian Wall Lizards? I think they're pretty. They also are doing a pretty good job of surviving on their own in New York - might be worth a look.

when I bred mine I would like to keep them cooler, I kept them in my finished basement which stayed at 74deg year round and I had great results. Gargoyles can take higher temps easier then cresteds esp. breeding females. Mine would have a hot spot of 85 when I was breeding them. They still can't take prolonged periods of high heat, but I think they would do better with it then cresteds. May be another option you can look into
