    11 in flex-watt
Hey guys, ever had any problems with 11 in wide flex-watt?

I heard that people have had their cages melt. Yes, I would use a thermostat...I just am concerned about a fire hazard and am considering using a smaller size ( with my thermostat of course ).....

I believe my Ultra-therm has hot spots so I am considering using flex-watt.

PLEASE give me your tips, experiences.....

    Thank you,
    Yosef

I haven't had any problems with using 11" flexwatt, not to say that it can't happen, it does.

I have never been a fan of the 11 inch Flex Watt. I am not sure what the application really is. I use heat tape as a tape, over some length. If I want a heat pad I use a heat pad (short length).

The 3 inch heat tape creates plenty of belly heat, we have used it for hatchlings up to adult burms. It still gets 130F+ when run full out without a heat controller.

And yes, I have seen plenty of folks get wrecked with the 11 inch. We carried it when we had our retail store, and I had customers bring back melted cages, cracked glass tanks, burnt coffee tables (from under the cage) and even melted carpet.

All of these were accidents or ignorance, but that stuff gets sooooo hot, the potential for danger is just too high for me to sell or recommend it.

I've used the 3", both types of 4", and the 11" flexwatt. I have yet to have an issue. I bought the tool for crimping the connections early on though so all my connections were done with the right tool and connectors that were designed to be used.

Now though I have moved on to professional racks. The vision racks use a heat cord that I don't really like and am now in the process of moving to ARS racks with their heat panels, which use flex Watt. I like how ARS puts the flex watt on sturdy steal panels that allow me to put a thermostat on securely. I also like the 9006 holds the largest of bloods and the 8514 will hold most other adult bloods and stacks perfectly with the 9006 and offers the nice windows on the front. Brian at ARS has always been great to us even when we ordered in the middle of a move.

I've never had a problem with it either. If you're really worried about it, you could probably hook up a dimmer switch in addition to your thermostat as a fail-safe. A high quality thermostat would not hurt either. But I check on my snakes often enough that if there were a problem I could likely catch it before it got too serious.

There is a difference in which type you get. The wattage is different between the 2. Same with the new 4" over the 3". I use the newer 11 inch with no problems...
