Small feeding victories

Tonight was full of surprises when it came to feeding.

Surprise 1: the little bee I got on Tuesday felt comfortable enough to eat and as far as I know ate f/t for the first time. (two small victories there :D)

Surprise 2: my shy spotnose nab the rat pup as soon as I put it down near her, usually she waits until I close her tub and walk away. :P

And surprise 3 (the best surprise of all): my pastel yellow belly appears to have decided her 2 month fast might be over. She scared me when she shot out of her hide to snatch the f/t pinkie rat, I'm pretty sure she split it open too. :O I was offering her a pinkie because I don't have access to f/t fuzzy rats and she seemed afraid of the rat pups she was eating before. (so one small victory there :D) The real test will come next week when I tried to feed her a rat pup again.

The only one that didn't take the rat when offered was my normal, but I left it in her tub. If she eats then all of my BPs will have eaten for once, if she refuses then it will be the first time she has ever refused a meal, so either way I get a first. :P I think she will eat it though, she struck at it but missed which tells me she wanted it, I just didn't feel like standing there waiting for her to strike again. ^__^

I'm super happy about my pyb eating and my bee taking f/t. Now if only my KSB would hurry up and shed so I can post some pictures of him (he's new as of last week). :P

They all ate! Woke up this morning and my normal ate the rat I left in over night for her. :D :banana::banana::banana::banana:

I can't wait to see if my pyb will take a rat pup next week. :)

Congrats!! I just had similar success with my two new additions. I just recieved a new Bee and a new BEL, both fed live hoppers by the breeder. To my suprise, both ate a f/t hopper each last night with minimal encouragement. Here's to continued success for us both. Congrats again.

great job. i tried f/t twice with my new pastel with no luck so i went with a live and he was very quick to eat that :D i will be trying f/t next time, hopefully with better results.

Sometimes they can be a little weird. I haven't figured out yet if I've just been extremely lucky or if I'm doing something right because I haven't had a problem switching from live to f/t. My large normal went from live mice right to f/t rats. She didn't even pause to consider that there might be a difference. :P

Two things that I've tried that have worked for me so far with f/t is 1.) when I am preparing them I let them thaw to room temp then I stick them in super hot water for a few minutes, this gets them really warm and 2.) if I have one that is considering taking it but not completely sure I'll leave it in their hide over night. Both these tricks have worked out well for me so far.

RichsBallPythons gave me some pretty good advice in a different thread I started (Baby ball python feeding question), you can try offering pre-killed before you try to get them on f/t too.
