    Johnson A419 for My Incubator??
I plan on getting one of these for my cooler/incubator. I am not leading myself down the wrong road am I? Thanks for looking!

Some people will say you should have a proportional thermostat for an incubator but I don't think it is a must. Johnsons can be set to a 1 degree drop, which will work fine if you have a pretty stable environment in your incubator. I used an Alife cheapo thermostat on my incubator this year and all 8 eggs hatched with out problems.

I would recommend a proportional thermostat (such as a Herpstat) for your incubator in order to provide more stable temps. Also the service life of a proportional thermostat is longer than a ON/OFF type since there are no parts "rubbing" to wear out, as ON/OFF types utilize a mechanical switch.

If you do decided to go with a ON/OFF type thermostat for your incubator I recommend checking out the RBI Vivarium Electronics VE-100 as it has a detachable probe and has no 'clicking' sounds when it turns on and off, which after awhile can drive you crazy.
The VE-100 is only 5 bucks more than a pre-wired Johnson and has a bunch more features, along with Rich from RBI's world class support.

I am not sure how much variation and how specific an incubator needs to be. Johnson's have a higher possibility for inaccuracy, they state +/- 2ºF add the 1º set point and you could see three degrees different from where you have set it. Most proportional ones have higher accuracy and so you will see +/- 0.5º shift from the set point. I don't know how much that matters but 3 degrees seems like a lot.

I wonder just how much the temp fluctuates when the female is on the eggs in the wild and the temp drops at night.

In the wild BP's lay their eggs in either underground burrows or inside termite mounds. Both of these places maintain a very consistent temperature and have high humidity.

We have used the JC units on incubators for years, with terrific results. We are now transitioning to the Vivarium Electronics units, which are also professional level products. Nice to support a reptile company making an excellent product.
