paper based substrate

I have tried several types of substrate. Paper seems to be the safest form of substrate out there, but I've found newspaper or paper towels can be less then absorbant, and rather messy if not spot cleaned in time.
Has anyone used shreded paper products like carefresh or have any input on that type of substrate?

Its not marketed as reptile substrate, so im not sure about it.

The CareFresh bedding smells weird to me - sort of like feet or garbage. Not exactly sure what that smell is. It's pricey, too (at least in this area). I'll just stick with aspen.

I bought a pack of 70 sheets of packing paper from Home Depot that fits my current tub and works great so far. It's 4.95 minus my military discount.

I use news paper end rolls and throw a hand full of aspen in the back for a little absorption. The care fresh is supposed to be just recycled paper, I wouldn't use the colored types but it should be ok. Sometimes its a little dusty but so is aspen

I have been experimenting with Carefresh for a couple of months now. It is great for humidity. It is very absorbant. The problem I have recently discovered is that it doesn't absorb the smells. It doesn't smell like anything to me until it soaks up something. Other than that it's a fine substrate.
