    Take a look at this...Just a Granite?
Here's a pic of my "Granite" girl ovulating last year. Unfortunately, the whole clutch died but what was developing in the eggs was definitely different. I know she's genetic, I just wonder what she'll truly turn out to be. She's aways looked "beyond" Granite to me. I'll hopefully have another good clutch from her next year after she's bred to my Chocolate Pin.

Some older pics of her, including the ones that made me buy her a few years ago. She's very timid and skittish, but I love her.

That's actually exactly what I tried last year, a YB Granite male. Out of 5 eggs, 4 died what looked like around halfway through incubation. The last one made it full term, came halfway out of the egg, and died. I don't know if there was possibly a "fatal gene combo" thing going on with the double Granite pairing, or if it was due to me using Miracle-Gro perlite (has fertilizer added, that I completely overlooked) last year for an incubation medium. I don't have any pics of her belly, and honestly haven't looked at it in so long, I can't even describe it from memory...I'll have to do that.

Here's the one that made it full-term. Obviously something happening there. Really sucks it didn't make it. Planning on breeding her to a Chocolate Pin next time around.

She definitely looks like a Granite. I think it would be smart to try and prove her out using a male without the Granite. I think she looks great:gj:

I think the dead baby in the picture is a Granite/YB and that it was just not fully developed (obviously).

I would bet that the Perilite with the fertilizer is certainly your culprit for the dead babies. I made the same mistake a few years ago with Leos and also had some very bad results. I now use calcined clay, so I dont have to worry about that anymore.

Good Luck on your projects and Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

I agree, breeding her to another Granite is the wrong way to establish what's truly going on with HER. I think a Chocolate Pin will be very interesting to mix her up with.

    Ryan,

I too have a 'granite' who has thrown two bad clutches. Each clutch went full-term, except the hatchlings were severely deformed. Although I did not pair him with a YB, rather a normal this year and a cinnamon last. Another thing to add, I too made the mistake of using Perlite with miracle grow. However, I have had 5 clutches hatch thus far this season, and it was only the clutch he sired that did not survive, the other 4 hatched pretty smoothly (other than some kinked caramels).

I am not sure if it is him, the gene he potentially posses, bad luck, or a combination of the 3.

Below is a picture of the granite sire...
