    Colombian Boa?
A few months back I got a baby Colombian Boa and I was told it was a Pastel Red Tail and with some research done by me (online) I came to the conclusion that my little guy was in fact just a regular Colombian Boa and not a "true" Red Tail. I'm not sure but I think I asked this question a few months back but I just wanted to get more opinions on this from more of you. Thank you!

    THESE WERE TAKEN YESTERDAY

AND THESE WERE TAKEN THE DAY I GOT HIM

These are the best pictures of Castro and the colors are pretty dead on but the last one is exactly what he looks like as far as colors go, using sunlight and not flash. On the second set of pictures he looks a bit thin because he is, he hadn't eaten a thing for about 4 or 5 months. I changed a few things and he ate his first mouse last night, FINALLY!

Looking at the last pic he looks like a pastel Colombian and not a "true" red tail, but he is definitely a good looking boa btw. :gj:

Awesome, thank you! So the person I got her from was right about the Pastel and wrong about the Red Tail... Oh and I meant to say that in the first set of pictures he looks thinner not the second set.

Thank you so much, this has been bugging me ever since I got him... *sigh* I know this sounds retarded but it really did ease my mind.

BCI = common boa, common Columbian boa, common red tailed boa
BCC = "true" Red Tailed Boa

BCI are often referred to as Red Tailed Boas or Columbian Red Tailed Boas. So unless the person said this snake was a "True" Red Tail, they are still accurate by saying it is a Columbian Red Tail. Confusing, I know. Boa constrictor constrictor is the only "True Red Tailed Boa" and they get a bit larger then boa contrictor imperator. Also, the morphs are only within the BCI sub-species. Most breeders keep the BCC breeding true so the morphs don't crop up in this species. If yours is a pastel, it is BCI.

And he is a handsome fellow! :gj:

    That isn't true though.
techically any of subspecies can be pastel as defined-
reduced black pigment with a general washed out side markings.
other sp morphs I can think of
BCC (Suriname I think )albino, pure wild caught
Brazilian BCC leucistic, wild caught has been breed
BC Longicauda anerythristic and Zero (patternless)
BC Occidentalis (Argentine) motley and t+ albino

I'm not sure if he is a pastel or not, but he is a good looking boa, nonetheless.

Unless a breeder specifies that the snake is of the constrictor subspecies (which a breeder would definitely do, as Bcc are worth much more than Bci) or lists the snake as being from a certain locale where Bcc are found, you can assume that a "red tail boa" is a Colombian Bci, especially if it is a morph. It is an unfortunate mistake commonly made by many keepers.

    In other words:
Colombian red tail boa = Colombian Bci = common Colombian boa
True red tail boa = Suriname/Peruvian/Guyana/Brazilian/etc boa = Bcc

Anyways, that's one beautiful little snake you've got!

Thank you guys! I love him whether he's a garter snake or a True Redtail, lol!

I got him from a girl on Craigslist but she was not the breeder... She already had a 10 foot Reticulated Python and didn't know that Colombian Boas would eventually get to a good size. She just told me that what she had was a male Pastel Redtial Boa and that he was a baby. I myself don't know if she got him sexed or if whomever she got him from just old her it was male. I SUCK at identifying any type of morph whether it's a Crested Gecko, Ball Python, or Boa, lol! This is why I turn to you lovely and helpful folks! You can try and explain to me over and over again the "rules" to naming these morphs but I will never get it. My brain just doesn't work that way... Soooo I guess i'll just say he's a Pastel Colombian Boa? :D
