    I believe the rule of thumb is at least 1500g and she should be 3 years old.

    1500 grams for sure but if a female hits that weight by the time she is 2 to 2 1/2, many breeders can get a late season clutch from such a female. Honestly though, the bigger the better. If you have a female that comes up on 1500 grams her second year but never goes off feed, then I'd keep feeding her and try to get her a little bigger before breeding. Those are usually the ones where if they hit 1500 by their second spring, never stop eating, and you keep feeding, they will be huge come fall (Oct/nov). Then they breed early season and lay early spring.

    I happy to say that the general rule now is 1500 grams. A few years ago everybody would have said 1200 grams. While I'm sure there are people that still breed at 1200 I think it is now the exception instead of the rule.
