Help with a health issue, Red spots/scales
    Hi all

Perhaps someone can help with a problem I have having with my Pied.

She has these red/pink spots under her scales. It looks like the skin is pushing up from the affected scales. Her belly also has pink areas.

Any ideas on what this is?? It is not mites of that I am sure.

It looks to me like mite bites that are irritated. I'd do a really careful check for them first.

    Hi

Yeah, I checked her over really well and I do not see any mites.

It appears as though these are small red blisters underneath the scales....

I actually don't have any idea past biting insects (black flies? fleas? I assume in the search for mites you would notice anything else along thoes lines) There was this post a while back... it might help it looks similar.

    Hey all

So i think out figured out the problem with my pied. Humidity.

What i have done is lower humidity right down and i now keep her on paper towels. Her water bowl is kept away from the heat pad. she now looks great and in fact has started eating again after a period of about 5 months.

Has anyone else heard of humidity creating this condition. All my other balls are doing great in a humidity range of 50 - 70%.

No actually, but then again I live where the humidity rarely gets over 70% for any length of time so keeping it at 60% isn't hard.

Yes. Too much humidity is not a good thing. Especially when the tubs and enclosures we keep these animals in suck with regards to air flow.

Humidity breeds mold, fungus, bacteria, etc. If waste is not cleaned up quickly and thoroughly and can rapidly lead to unsanitary conditions.

50% humidity is fine as long as you don't have to spritz the heck out of the enclosure. At 70% you are over the limit of what most of these set ups can handle in terms of air flow.

I had a similar issue with "water blisters" on a girl that liked to hide in her water bowl (all the time), instead of her regular hides. I replaced her bowl with one too small for her to fit into, did a week of betadine soaks, and the bumps were gone in two sheds.

    Hi,

this is an older thread, but i must aks you, if the red spots are disappeared?

I think they come from mite bites or other parasites.

    Maybe you now know more...

    best regards
