Milky eyes after a shed?

My male pied just finished a good shed, but his eyes are still "blue." It looks like the eyecaps were retained but it was a very good, humid shed. He's never had a bad shed actually. I've noticed his eyes have always been a bit "duller" than my other snakes, and I remember reading an article about a pair of zoo Boelens that had a similar condition but I don't remember the outcome. He also "periscopes" a lot, I'm not sure if it's related to poor eyesight?
Any thoughts?

Did you check the piece of shed that came off of his head to see if the eye caps came off? It would seem like retained eye caps to me, but I'm no expert.

Looks like retained eyecaps to me. You could check his shed to see if the eye caps came off to be sure. Nice photography skills BTW

Thanks for the replies! I'll try to get the eyecaps off if there are any. I really hope it's just that.

I honestly didn't look too closely at his shed this time. He shed in the water bowl so it was a squishy mess. I have seen eyecaps in previous sheds however.

I could be wrong though, so I'd suggest getting other opinions before trying to get an eye cap off that may not even be there. :rolleyes: Hopefully someone else can chime in here who has had experience with something like this!

Its the eye caps... Get a pillow case and get it wet with warm water. Toss snake in for 45 mins and tie it off. Put the pillow case on the warm side in cage.


This should get rid of the caps if it doesnt you can get rubber thimbles and lightly rub it off.

ive never tried it but i'd think rubbing it with thimbles or anything rough could potentially damage the snakes eyes.

recently i was given advice from a bp.net user to put a little A&D on the eye during the shedding cycle. they told me to do it once a day till she shed. i only did it once and it worked perfectly. she was a new snake and seemed to have a couple stuck sheds. i tried the humidity box, soaking, spraying but the only thing that worked was the A&D.

Rubber thimble wont harm the eye as long as your not rough. Barely putting any pressure will cause the caps to roll right off.

Rich already covered it but a shipping bag works really well instead of a pillow case. I don't have a lot of spare pillow cases lying around. Bachelor pad. LOL.
