    Enclosure option
Hey guys, I am now trying to learn the basics of keeping a python and making sure it really is something my family would enjoy before we go and get a new permanent addition to the family. We woe keep it in the family room, so we would want the cage to be attractive. We were looking at the Exo-Terra large terrarium 36"X18"X18". This looks like it would be a good choice for an adult BP. We would have to modify the screen to hold the RH but all in all, we like it. Would this be a great option?

Screen cages are a no-no, for humidity/heat issues, as well as nose rubbing issues. Go with something like Visions, Precision, or RBI cages. They look nice and are appropriate for all kinds of snakes.

This is a glass terrarium. It has a screen top. We would be modifying the screen top to better hold RH

I, Myself am looking into proper caging options for my 8 week old BP. Currently he is in a 10gal tank with a screen lid... and I'm not entirely sure that is the best option for him. Although he is still quite small, it doesn't seem logical to have him in such a small environment. Wouldn't this affect the 'hot side' 'cold side' goal?

Congrats, you're already ahead of the game by doing your research before getting your animal. You'll be so glad you took time to educate yourself first... so will your snake. :)

For a great overview of keeping ball pythons healthy, check out the BP.net caresheet:

Keep in mind that ball pythons are typically shy snakes so if you decide to use a glass tank, it's a good idea to provide hides and cover/block out several glass tank sides to provide more security. Secure snakes eat more consistently = fewer headaches for you.

Best of luck, and enjoy reading the forums for tips and solutions!
