Cloud computing - what are your thoughts?

I'm curious about this as it always seemed like a truly horrible idea to me. :oops:

Giving your data to someone else to look after and keep secure is a level of trust I'm not comfortable with. I don't want my sensitive data accesible from anywhere in the world - and I certainly wouldn't trust them with data like music content that would cost a lot of money to replace if it was lost.

I'm afraid to say I laughed like a drain at the recent amazon cloud debacle and the reasons behind the failure of the seperate zone model. :cool:

So what makes it such a good idea? Explain the attraction to a suspicious old scrote please. :please:

I use Google for almost everything, they use the cloud for everything. I back everything up. I export my contacts and calendar to my laptop periodically and back my emails up to another email account. I use docs but back them up too. I will probably upload my music when I get my invite to do so. I download most of my music from Amazon these days but don't use their storage/cloud, I back all my music up on my laptop and then burn cd's.
Anything has the potential to get lost, no matter where it is stored. The key is to protect your own stuff and don't count on someone else to do it.
The cloud is going to be used more and more, data is going to be lost and sites/businesses are going to be hacked. That is an unfortunate reality in this electronic world, nothing on the web is truly safe. The only sure way to keep your data safe is to not share it in the first place...no email, no forum, no text, no Facebook, no Twitter...no nothing.
Use it. Be smart about it.
