Can you all help me with my rack? stain question
currently i have a built rack to house 7, 41qt tubs. i have 3 corns, 2 balls and a BRB, i know the BRB will need a bigger cage, im not worried about that now....

    my question is this:
I want to stain my rack a darker wood color, maybe an oak color... i seen two types of stain, a traditional kind where you "paint" it on with a brush... and a "spray paint" kind. both were at lowes and both were the same brand...

what kind do you all recommended?
how long should i let it sit outside and dry/air out before i put my snakes back into the rack??

i am thinking towards the brush kind, bc i am going to be taking it apart, and redoing the shelves so they are all equally apart... and i was going to let it sit for 5 days- a week, outside...

what do you all think? thanks everyone!

any stain you use you will ha ve to seal it with a polyurethane coat. Other wise humidity will never allow it to dry within the tub the snake will come in contact with.

Or get a stain that has polyurethane within.

You could use an alcohol based stain. They dry within minutes and I think would be safe to put the animals back in less than a week. They are tricky to apply and you won’t find them at any lowes or home depot. You would need to go to a professional paint supplier to find one. But for the best finish they are the best product you can find. When I do finishing in my cabinet shop their all I use.

I used the brush on stain for mine. I let it dry for a week and the polyurithane coat is a must. Plus it gives it a nice shine as well. I would recommend a couple coats as well and time each coat so that you wipe it off at the same time for each panel so the stain is even. It can be tricky sometimes =)

okay, im on my laptop now, and the link worked!, your rack looks awesome!!
is there a reason why you didnt stain the inside?

when i do mine, i dont think i will put stain where i will be placing my heat tape, since it will be covered up.

It might not be dark enough for your tastes but give mineral oil finish a try on a section you don't see to test it out. It's been used for centuries to stain wood and protects it fairly well. It's natural and less harmful chemically speaking then a lot of the poly stuff out there and will be easier to touch up & repair than poly.

That isnt too bad, i prefer something a little darker thought. i may look into that just because i feel it would be more safe

I didn't stain the inside because the shelves are made of melamine and the stain wont stick to that plastic cover over the particle board. Do try it on a practice board and leave the first layer on for like 5 minutes and wipe it off and see if you like the look, then repeat until it looks like you want. Also, since it was such a big piece of furniture, some of my stain was a tad uneven so I did end up using the spray kind just as a touch up on the few edges that were a little off.

Im going to practice before hand too. This is going to he kept in a closet any way.... ( spare bed room, we will be converting into a giant closet,) so I'm not really worried about it looking perfect. Just want it to match the dressers lol.

    Thanks for all the input.
