Figuring out het percentages??

How do you go about figuring out the het percentage when you breed a homozygous snake to a 66% het, 50% het, etc? What about a 100% het to a 66% or 50% het?

I'm not the best with genetics, but the 50 or 66% means that is the chance that the snake is het for that gene, not that the snake is half or 66% het. I'm not sure if that makes sense or not.

For instance if you bred a normal, to a proven 100% het of say an albino, then all of the snakes would look normal, but half of the snakes should be het for albino. You don't know what snakes are het until you breed them and prove them out. Therefore, if you were to just sell the babies and never prove them out, then they would be considered 50% het albino -- because half or 50% of the babies should be het.

You are taking a chance when buying anything less than 100% het, but normally they are quite a bit cheaper.

Thanks for the fast response but I'm wondering about taking the 50% het baby and breeding it to a 100% het and how I'd figure out what percentage het those offspring would be.

het to a 66% and producing no visuals technically makes 33% and het to 50% makes 25% but depending on how many eggs you had, chances are it won't be het at all if you didn't produce any homozygous

Breed a het to a normal and you have a 50% possible het. Breed a het to a possible het and you'll still have 50% possible hets. When you start breeding possible hets together you might as well call them normals because unless you produce a visual there's a good chance that they aren't even carrying the gene you're looking for.

Many breeders only accept the idea of 66% chance hets (the normals from recessive het X het) and 50% chance hets (normal from recessive het X normal). However, if you bred a large number of 66% hets to normals on average 33% of the offspring would be hets and likewise if you bred a large number of 50% hets to normals on average 25% of there offspring would be hets. The problem is that considering any individual 66% or 50% it either is a het or it isn't so it's offspring with a normal are either 50% hets or 0% hets so some don't accept the 33% or 25% labels. I've got several 25% chance het girls from 50% chance het males I've not yet proven and I feel that is as good a way as any to keep track of the chance that they are hets.
