    Need some help....
I am interested in purchasing a puppy from a breeder that is out of state. They have a nice website and I have talked to the owner on the phone but how does one really know that who they are dealing with is legitimate. I know there is such a thing as BOI on sites like ours but how would I persue something like that for a Dachshund Breeder.

I need to send her a deposit for a litter of puppies that are due in May. I just hate to send my money to a total stranger.

Maybe I am being too cynical but you hear of internet scams all the time and you can never be too sure. I tried to check the BBB but they didn't have nothing on them. I also sent am email to the Tourist & Convention Ctr for the town they are located in - asking them to at least verify that the company/business does exist.

I was just wondering what else I can do.

    Thanks everyone.

You can contact the town or city hall and find out if they have a business permit in town, also the local police there and see if they've had any "fraud" cases involving them.

Check with the AKC to see it they are even owners of Dashounds. I have also found that most purebred dogs have their own breeder clubs that can give great information on that specific breed. You can also talk to the organization about different breeders to see if they are recognized by them. That is how I found my boxer's breeders.

This by far is the best solution to your issue. AKC have complete records of the kennel and its owner, as well as all the puppies they produced. Tracking the breeder this way will definitely determine if its legit or not.

Consider adopting. Websites such as petfinder.org have loads of dachshunds available for adoption. Many purebred. You can also search for breed specific rescues in your area. On a monetary note, adoptions are often cheaper then buying from a breeder and the dog usually comes up to date on shots and fixed.
