Thermostat setting question.

I built a tub rack to keep our QT snakes in.
We do not have anyone in it yet as I am waiting on the new RB VE200 stat.
I do have it up and running on a dimmer just to have everything warmed up and make it easier when the stat is installed.
My question is:
What hot spot temperature do I set it for??:confused::confused:

I am getting 2 different readings depending on how the tub is set up.
Reading #1 ranges from 91.2 to 93.1 on all seven levels **With the temp sensor completely taped down over the hot spot.**
Reading #2 ranges from 83.5 to 85.8 on all seven levels ** with the temp sensor just held down with a 1/4 inch piece of tape.**

I am not planning to keep any tape in the tubs once the snakes are in them but like I said, I wanted everything set up right. I would think that the "fully taped" temp would be the correct one because it would best simulate a snake laying on the hot spot BUT I have been wrong before. :rolleye2:

So should I leave the temps as set OR do I need to bump them up a little?

A good way to figure out the temps you need is monitoring the temps with a digital thermometer or temp gun while the tubs are in use. For now setting one sounds like the temps are in a good range, and being taped down all the way prevents cold/cool air from changing the temp of your probe. Use setting one and monitor closely for the first few days your snake is in the tub and you'll be able to see if any changes need to be made.

A temp gun is what you need :gj:

You can shoot the hot spot on each level and it will give you a more accurate idea of your temps.

I shoot the hot spot and sometimes the snake if on the warm side which give me a good idea of where my temps are at.

Got one I have had for a loooooong time:D

I'm just trying to get the rack set right.
I am just worried about getting too hot for the balls.
That is why I am thinking about leaving it where it is for now, because a snake under a hide should be about the same as a probe fully taped down with no airflow.
