    Rack system
Could you use a normal storage rack like from walmart or target as your rack system like these? Or do you need a special type of container or rack?

Not snake proof, they will escape or get their head crushed etc not suitable for BP many have tried and many have failed.

Here is a good source for rack system http://www.animalplastics.com/

How about just buying a reg shelving unit and putting tubs in?

Sure but you will have to deal with the leads which kind of defeat the purpose.

There are many DIY out there that can help you with the design of a rack.

And I am sure there are a few here on this forum in the DIY section as well ;)

What do you mean by leads?

There are a few excellent DIY write ups in the DIY section that are not sticky, check 'em out.

The short answer is no, you can't convert normal shelving units into suitable habitats for Ball Pythons.

    Your choices pretty much are:
    1. Buy a rack specially designed for snakes
    2. Build your own rack specially designed for snakes.

If you decided to buy one I would recommend Reptile Basics. I own 9 of their racks and I couldn't be happier with them. http://www.reptilebasics.com/reptile-rack-systems/

Personally I'd not try to save on a rack or controls (t-stats) but you can certainly use lidded tubs in a rack/shelf arrangement.

Seconding the animal plastics, they make a great product at a great price, I'm about to buy another one. (Tax return WHERE ARE YOU).

You can look around your local area (craigslist is great) for a used rack, just make sure you clean the bejeesus out of it.
