breeders

okay so now that ive been looking at a whole bunch of reputable breeders to find my future hets another question came to mind.

how much do some of the bigger breeders make a year? ball park.

i have no interest in quitting my day job but i see a whole lot of morphs well into the thousands of dollars. i totally understand that it costs money to house and feed all those snakes. that it takes years to raise and breed then raise and breed...and so on to create new morphs. i have a buddy who breeds a few snakes and makes a few grand a year which he uses to off set the cost of housing and feeding. but his half dozen or so snakes is nothing compared to the quantity of snakes in the "Big Boys" collections.

You ever think back on the '90's, when people raising ostriches were the rage for about a week or so before the marked fell out, if ever there really was one?! Not trying to be rude by any means but it should be JUST about the money, in my opinion. As to what they make, I wouldn't begin to know, as I think it would depend on their reputation, location, quality and type of animals/morphs, etc. Like any business, there's a lot of variables there and staying ahead of the market curve with trying to breed and predict years into the future as to what's going to be the money makers...not a job I'd care to undertake!

All I'm going to say is that if you want to make money you have to spend money, and a lot of it in this hobby. We're talking tens of thousands of dollars before you would ever see a nice chuck coming back. It takes a serious amount of money to get to a place where you are ahead of the curve. If you start out with single morph genes and start doing some breeding, by the time you start making doubles those have already dropped drastically in price.

Well-stated and spot on advice. Nicely put, Slitherin.

Hundreds of thousands and on upwards. If you watch any of the videos. Some of those racks are loaded with high end morphs. I wouldn't want to guess the value of even a single one of those racks. It is part money, part luck, and part hubandry. You have to be a good combo of all those skills to be successful. That's why people get in and get out. You need to be dedicated, organized, and lucky to get your break.

I think you need to start out as an enthusiast first. You really must appreciate the breed. You can not be thinking dollars when you get into breeding them. Once you start thinking dollar signs it loses its interest as a hobby and you lose the love for the animal. That is when things start to fall apart. That is when you start to lose money and lose snakes. That is my opinion. You can only be successful if you are really truly dedicated and have a passion for it and not want to make the big dollars from the get go.

A lot of it is a gamble as well.
Look at Brian from BHB. He took a MAJOR gamble when he bought the first imported Pinstripe. If that male hadn't proven out like it did, he probably wouldn't be where he is now. The gamble paid off in his case.
It doesn't always pay off though.

im not looking to make money off my hobby. i am just curious what kind of money trades hands at some of the larger facilities.

ive kept and worked with reptiles my entire life. the money i spend on my animals is because everything about them makes me happy. i have a good job that i love. i dont want to start a business and its not about me making money. just wanted to know is all.

Thats a question that really can only be answered by those people. On a forum you will prob get mostly hearsay on that question.
