    Little help please?
    So I have a pastel YB male and a female pastel and female normal.. I'm thinking if I throw him to the pastel I will get
    33%% super pastel
    33% super pastel YB
    33% pastel YB
    right???

    And if he goes to the normal I would get
    50% pastel
    50% YB

    Just want to know if I'm thinking of this right

    How do you get a normal? The female pastel has one normal gene and the pastel YB has no normal gene but you can still get a normal?

    Hi,

    Pastel is a het form so there is a normal gene there and yellowbelly is also het so there is a normal there.

    If there were no normal genes then it would be a superpastel ivory not a pastel yellowbelly.

    The male Yellowbelly Pastel is not a homozygous form. Its basically a double het for ivory and super pastel, if you look at it that way, and has a "normal" gene still.The only way to get no normals is to breed a homozygous to something, such as if your male was an Ivory Pastel OR Super Patel Yellowbelly. Hope that makes sense, lol.

    So for the pastel YB it has a normal gene and pastel and yellowbelly gene? But the normal isn't showing 0_o

    Hi,

    Yes - you need to understand the differences between what we call recessive, co-dom and dominant morphs.

    A recessive looks normal as a heterozygous but visualy different as a homozygous.

    A codom looks different (from a normal) as a heterozygous and different again ( from both normal and the het ) as a homozygous.

    A dominant morph looks different (from a normal ) as a het but then looks the same as a het when it is homozygous.

    Pastel and yellowbelly are the het forms of their respective mutations - the homozygous forms (which are the ones that cannot produce normals ) being superpastel and ivory.

    It tales a little getting used to but once it gets sorted out into which morph is in which group things get a lot easier to predict.

    Think of the genes as being in pairs if it helps.

    Pastel = one pastel gene and one normal gene.
    Superpastel = two pastel genes.
    Yellowbelly = one yellowbelly and one normal gene.
    Ivory = two yellowbelly genes.
