Snake got bit!

So, I just tried to feed my snake a Live Rat and my snake tried to move away quickly and the Rat bit my snake. Its not bad at all, I got a paper towel wet and wiped the bite. There was like no blood but I could see blood where the bite was. I'm worried about the bite getting infected so I'm just wondering what to do. He ate last week and he didn't seem too interested in eating tonight, so I'm wondering if I should kill the Rat and put it in his tank over night. But I'm more concerned about the bite. What should I do?

You need to keep the wound clean and maybe put some neosporin without pain reliever on the wound. You should keep the snake on paper towels or newspaper as substrate until the wound heals.

Thats what I was thinking. But the bite isn't bad at all should I still go through the same procedures?

No neosporine. It softens their scales and putting it on daily could cause more harm than good. Get a betadyne solution from any drug store. Apply to the area once a day. This will clear it up without softening the scales. If the wound isn't bad you could probably keep him on the same sub. But no matter how bad the bite is it should be cleaned at least for a few days to a week with the bdyne.

Whether or not to kill the rat is up to you, but don't leave it in the cage while it is still alive.

I'd probably say take the rat out, do whatever you want with it, and leave your snake be. Apply some neosporin (without painkillers) or betadine(sp?) if you wish. Infection isn't SUPER likely, but if it does happen it's NOT a good thing.

Yea, I need to disinfect it with something but Iv never heard anything about beta-dyne so I'll see what others say.

Yea I know not to leave it in live. I feed in a separate enclosure so the Rat was never in his tank. The Rat and snake where immediately separated once my snake got bit. I think I'm just going to kill it and put it in over night or at least for a few hours.

Betadyne I'm probably spelling it wrong is an iodine solution. It's the only thing I use on any of my reptiles when they have an injury. It also works on mouth rot. Its exactly what the vet would do. Per my vet when I first started in this whole crazy industry. Chlorhexidine also will work great. For disinfecting the area. Both will not harm the animal. I know the first thing many people think of is the neosporine which probably won't hurt once or twice if put on sparingly. But it does nothing to disinfect the area and clean it. The only thing it will do is soften their scales putting them at risk for further injury or infection. It's really just vasaline with some light antibiotics in it.
