Mites! :rage: Second opinions on Nix as a remedy?
:rage: so I pulled out my baby boa today to get a quick look at her, and what do I find? About four darned mites crawling on her. A closer inspection of her water bowl revealed two more in there as well. So out everything came from her cage and the ball's cage, and everything was cleaned with a 20% bleach solution and rinsed out. Now the ball's cage is airing out (he has a display type cage, so it's taking longer) and the boa's cage is already aired. She's back in there now, paper towels as substrate, hides have been bleached and her water bowl has been cleaned with piping hot water and soap.
Now, I've gotten a tip from someone who works at a local reptile store to use Nix (made for human head lice and nits) and then found this post about it's use on sSNAKESs http://www.ssnakess.com/forums/gener...ake-mites.html
Has anybody else used this, and with what success? I intend to start the spraying pretty much immediately as I just bought the Nix and distilled water, but wanted second opinions.
Re: Mites! :rage: Second opinions on Nix as a remedy?
I had a mite outbreak a few weeks back. We used the commercial sprays for weeks without success. It was suggested that i try Nix. One small bottle of nix in one gallon of water, mix well, pour in spray bottle, spray snake and enclosure.
The mites were gone after that first treatment and have not returned. I did do the two follow-up treatments as suggested just to be safe. There have been no bad side effects from the Nix and none of the snakes seemed to be bothered by it.
Go for it!

Thanks for the reply. That was pretty much exactly what I was told to do, and I'm glad to hear that it works. I will definitely be trying this then.

I'll just say that Prevent A Mite is worth its weight in gold, and I am HAPPY to spend the 16.00 on a can.

I've never used it, but I know some people who do use it.
I don't think Provent-A-Mite can be shipped to Canada...

I know you cant get it legally shipped to NY state in the US, I dont know about Canadian regulations on it though. There are some canadian breeders I'm sure the OP could try to ask. MarkusJayne ball pythons and urban python are two off the top of my head. Mark, i know is a great guy I've exchanged a few emails with him in the past.
