Is it possible to keep a ball python set up in a basement? I don't know if you could keep the temps up well enough since it is unfinished right now.

You could keep a bp anywhere, as long as you can get proper temps in your setup. Not everyone basement is the same temps so its kinda hard to say.

All of mine are in the basement. Our basement is semi-finished. It has a few walls up, not insulated or anything. I turned one of the rooms into my snake/rat room. I do heat it with a space heater in the winter, but otherwise there is no problem. Like the other person said, as long as you can keep the temps up in the enclosure that's all that matters. If you have to use a space heater in the winter it's no big deal.

I was curious about keeping in the basement, my fiance who's nervous around snakes asked how well they would do in a garage or basement jokingly. I didn't think it would be ok if they didn't have insulation and the temps in the room were low.

I definitely wouldn't put them in a garage. Even if it had great heating/ac there is so much air exchange when the door opens, not to mention all the fumes. I'm in IA and our basement doesn't drop below 60 on the really nasty -30 to -40 degree days. It usually sits at 65 in the winter. With the oil space heater in my snake room it stays 70-75, and there are two windows in that room. There's also no insulation and the outside walls are just cement blocks. An old farm house basement might be a little more sketchy.

As for the summer months the snake room sits at 75 and 80 on the nasty hot days. The flexwatt actually does heat up the room a bit because the rest of the basement stays at 70.

I checked the temp today and it was 65 and it was pretty cold outside so what I might do is set up the 10 gallon tank I have, get a UTH and see what temp I can get it at. Should I use a lamp? If so what kind of bulb and how often?
