I have just begun breeding mice, and plan to keep it small. So my total number of mice is probably much smaller than others. However, my strategy for combating odor has been successful so far. I thought perhaps it would be helpful to others. I have only two 10 gallon tanks of mice right now. However, as you know, they can stink to high heaven quite quickly. I have kids, and we like to have guests over once in a while, so I did not want my house smelling like a farm. :colbert: I gleaned a bit of info from various people, and here is what I do.
-bed on pine pellets (Equine Fresh)
-Wash down cage 1x per week and submerge all cage accessories in Chlorohexadine/warm water solution. Scrub, rinse and dry those and return to clean cage.
-Air purifier in room.
I seriously do not smell the mice at all, and my husband (who is very picky about that stuff) does not either. I think washing the cage accessories 1x per week is the key. The mice mark EVERYTHING, and unless you scrub those down, there will be a residual odor. The pine pellets used alone, without anything else work great. (I tried topping them with shredded paper and aspen but that seemed to hold odor). The hepa air purifier takes care of whatever odor may remain.
