Carpet Soaking Habits

My small female Coastal Carpet has been soaking for days and then gets out of the water bowl for 2-3 days and goes back in the water for a week. She hasn't shown any signs that she's about to shed. I don't know what's going on but she's never done this before.

One of my 2010s was a regular 'soaker' for the first few months of life at the breeder's place. She's never once soaked for me, and is either out on her perches or in her hides. I guess a change of venue made her decide that she didn't feel like soaking anymore.

They can just be weird sometimes, no biggie.

Make sure you don't have mites, as this can be a cause of soaking behavior. They are easy to spot if you keep your snakes on paper towels.

My three year old IJ never soaked, ever. About four months ago she did just what you describe. Then she just stopped. She wasn't blue or even close to shedding, her temps never changed, humidity remained the same...she just soaked (mostly) on and off for a week-ish. She seemed rather pleased with herself too.

yea mine go through soaking stages, I just figured it was just snakes being snakes. just annoying when the big one goes swimming in the middle of the night and you hear the water splashing around. she doesn't do that too often tho

My bredli never goes in her dish. She took a deuce in there once, I spanked her, and it never happened again. On a serious note, bredlis are hail from dry and rocky areas so I guess they aren't as into the water scene as coastals and other carpets are. Then again, maybe my bredli is just a dirtball and doesn't like to wash. Once in a blue I'll put her in the tub for a rinse off and lets just say she is very displeased with me during that time.

Also, she has always shed perfectly for me and the only humidity she gets is from her dish.


Not to scare you, but don't snakes soak a lot if they have mites?

That was the first thing I checked for and she doesn't, I use P.A.M. so id hope I don't have mites lol.
