    any archery people
Any archery people out there? A friend has been teaching me for the last few months. I just target shoot and been using a recurve. I used some of my snake money and just ordered a PSE mustang. Anyone else find this as fun as I do?

I am sooooooooooo interested in archery! I have not gotten into yet because I do not have the proper equipment but that is going to change very soon. My step-father is into archery and I am hoping that he will be willing to teach me the ropes.

I'am 52 and just started, I wish Ide done it a long time ago. My friend who is teaching me was nice enought to let me use one of his bows. Get your step-father to teach you its so much fun. I'am going to learn a compound next and then Iam going to try a crossbow. Ide like to save enough money up for a olimpic bow.

I used to dabble in the art of losing arrows in my backyard...and once into my neighbor's shed. But I havnt in a long time, I used to shoot a recurve from 1964..it was a classic. :)

I bow hunted for years. I haven't for a long time now. Screwed up my left should playing sports and bow hunting is almost impossible now. i could get a medical permit and start hunting with a crossbow. But who's got time anymore.

    Good Luck!

I have been a casual archer for many years, and a combat archer in the SCA group for several. I just recently(the last 5? years) pretty much have stopped. Both a minor injury to the shoulder ball, and just not having time to go somewhere to shoot have contributed to me stopping.

Now I could easily shoot, the shoulder is okay. But if I set up in my backyard, I'd need a good backdrop or lose arrows into the leaf litter. If you have a backyard, you can easily set up a canvas or hay bale backstop and shoot all day long. Don't worry if you suck at first, just get the techniques down and practice practice practice.

Compound bows are different than recurve, but if you want to hunt, you almost have to use a compound. Most folks can't draw a strong enough recurve to hunt large game(squirrels and rabbits would be fine though).

Crossbows have almost no relation to true archery as far as technique or practicing. Not to say they are less of a weapon or not as much fun.. but they don't require anything like the technique of a longbow, so it won't relate between the two. If you practice with a crossbow, make certain the backstop is thick enough to stop the bolts, because they typically pack a LOT more power. You also don't need nearly as much practice or strength to shoot a crossbow, so they can be great fun.

Just a tip: never ever store your bow standing in a corner. You'll warp the limbs and could cause them to crack or twist when you pull it, resulting in possible injury and definite embarrassment.

I love archery. Got into it when I was 14 or so with the help of a friends dad. I started as a means to get into hunting, but like shooting probably more than hunting overall. It's a fun challenge and makes for a good outing for a day.

I would say that the crossbow isn't nearly as satisfying to shoot in the long run. They are great for someone who can't shoot a traditional bow for whatever reason, or just want to expend their hunting season (depending on the state). I've shot a crossbow a few times and it's just not the same. Might as well be a bb gun. I'll stick to longbows and muzzleloaders when shooting for fun.

Heck yeah! When I was younger I was a member of JOAD, the Junior Olympic Archery Development.

I shoot occasionally now, either when I can get to the range, or when I'm up at my cabin in the mountains I have a target.
I have a PSE Optima recurve, the blue riser. Stabliser/ sight/ etc. I need to get some higher # limbs though, since I am a lot stronger than I was a few years ago...

    Archery is way fun. :)

I still have never had the chance to bowhunt, but I'd love to. I have a friend who bowhunts buffalo, and it's my favorite meat. Bison burgers and steak all around!!
