scabbies on chin

My 15 year old neutered male, has some scabs on his chin. Nowhere else; they seem a bit itchy, but if you overdo it, he backs away. (they are not bleeding.) Any idea what this could be? I plan on taking him to the vet next month anyway, since he is due for a checkup; just wondering in the meantime.

Without seeing it, I'm betting it's "cat acne". They get it from plastic food bowels. The plastic gets greasey from the food and if you don't clean it every now and again they will get scabs on their chin. It starts out as black dirt, but it's hard to see unless your kitty has a white chin. He'll be fine, just clean the plastic bowel and it will go away.

If you don't have a plastic bowel, it can happen with other bowels, it just takes a bit longer to happen with glass/metal.

But yeah, to the OP:
It's probably just kitty acne. If you keep their bowls clean and maybe get some of those cat bath wipes that are sold commercially to wipe down the chin every now and then it should clear up.

Pics could help though, because there's no way of knowing for sure.

Agreed on the acne, my old lady cat has the same thing, vet put her on antibotics last visit and it cleared up and them came right back. Strange as she generally eats canned or raw and prefers to take her food out of the bowl onto a towel and my bowls are metal. Warm compresses can help as well, I clean her bowls often but maybe will start doing it daily and see if that helps.

Sometimes they have a predisposition to it, and it's not necessarily their bowls or anything. I find that it happens a lot with the longer haired cats because their fur traps more stuff near the skin, so there's not much you can really do other than keep it as clean as possible.
